Where to Buy Fresh Herbs in Manila: Basil, Rosemary, Thyme and More

Fresh herbs make the difference between a good dish and a great one, but in Manila they can be hard to find in good condition. Supermarket packs are often small, wilted or out of stock.
Herbs Manila kitchens use most
- Basil: for pasta, pesto, pizza and Thai dishes. Look for bright leaves with no black spots.
- Flat-leaf parsley and cilantro: for salads, salsas and garnish.
- Rosemary and thyme: for roast meat, potatoes and bread. Woody herbs keep the longest.
- Dill: for fish, salads and sauces.
- Mint: for drinks, desserts and Middle Eastern dishes.
- Tarragon, oregano and sage: for French and Italian cooking.
How to choose fresh herbs
Fresh herbs smell strong when you rub a leaf. Avoid bunches with yellow or slimy leaves, or stems that look dry and brown.
How to keep them in the Manila heat
Put soft herbs such as parsley, cilantro and mint in a glass of water in the fridge, loosely covered. Keep basil in water on the counter, because cold turns it black. Wrap rosemary, thyme and oregano in a slightly damp paper towel and refrigerate. More tips in our guide to keeping greens and herbs fresh.
